In 2021, the State Service Management Office again hosted a very successful, engaging and creative TSS Aboriginal Employee Network (AEN) Gathering. The event took place on the 24th of November at the Domain Tennis Centre, Hobart.
The Gathering 2021 commenced with a deeply moving and inclusive Welcome to Country ceremony led by Sinsa Mansell; a proud Tasmanian Aboriginal woman from larapuna in the Northern region of lutruwita Tasmania. Sinsa is a co-founder, performer and choreographer with pakana kanaplila, a Traditional/Contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal dance troupe. Sinsa performed the Welcome to Country ceremony with Nathan Pitchford, and her brother, Harley Mansell. Sinsa spoke about Aboriginal people’s inherent and enduring connections with their Country and Ancestors and acknowledged and celebrated everyone present.
This year the focus at the Gathering was on concurrent Aboriginal cultural workshops in the morning, including weaving with natural fibres, shell work, native bush foods, whittling and working with ochre, connections to County and showcasing Tasmanian Aboriginal resources. The cultural workshop experience highlighted the power that comes from cultural sharing, the creation of opportunities to have different and valuable conversations and build respectful relationships. The cultural sharing experience encouraged deep engagement and connections with others and helped to build Aboriginal champions across agencies and roles.
Afternoon small group conversations focused on considering how we can increase Aboriginal employment opportunities, identifying potential workforce development opportunities and exploring ways to increase capabilities in line with Closing the Gap, progressing positive life outcomes for all Tasmanian Aboriginal people, and building respectful partnerships for working together into the future. A common denominator across all small group conversations was the importance of building meaningful relationships with others.
Feedback from the Gathering again highlighted participant’s enjoyment and deep appreciation in sharing cultural knowledge and practices with Aboriginal people, and the opportunity to have different conversations. Everyone was extremely busy, connected and conversations throughout the day were animated, excited and inclusive.
