Aboriginal employees value-add to all workplaces
The Tasmanian State Service Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2026 represents a renewed commitment to ensuring the Tasmanian State Service is a place where Aboriginal people are welcomed, supported and empowered to succeed.
As Tasmania’s largest employer, the Tasmanian State Service has both an opportunity and a responsibility to create meaningful employment pathways and careers for Aboriginal people and to foster workplaces where Aboriginal employees are respected, valued and supported to thrive.
The strategy reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to improving employment outcomes for Aboriginal people and strengthening the contribution of Aboriginal knowledge, experience and leadership across the Tasmanian State Service.
Supporting the strategy is the first three-year Aboriginal Employment Action Plan 2026-2028, which sets out practical initiatives designed to strengthen capability, improve systems and embed a consistent whole-of-service approach. One of the key targets that will be tracked to support the action plan is:
- Increase the representation of Aboriginal people working in the Tasmanian State Service from 3.65 per cent (2024) to 4.5 per cent (2028).

Aboriginal Employment Portal
The Aboriginal Employment Portal provides cultural and resource support to Aboriginal people to assist in gaining and maintaining employment in the State Service.
It provides access to a range of resources, links, advice, services and tools to support Aboriginal people to be job ready and gain employment with us.
Special leave options for Aboriginal employees
The State Service offers Aboriginal cultural leave and Aboriginal family relationships provisions for leave to support your personal, cultural and professional needs.
NAIDOC Week
The State Service encourages and supports employees to participate in local NAIDOC Week celebrations each year, and to coordinate celebrations within their own agency. Since 2020, the State Service Management Office within the Department of Premier and Cabinet has coordinated a whole-of-service event, encouraging visible celebration across the State Service.
