Strong, liveable communities: Tasmania's Active Ageing Plan 2017-2022

1,500 responses to Active Ageing consultation

Over 1,500 Tasmanians have contributed to a state-wide consultation process to develop the state’s next Active Ageing Strategy 2023-2029. The result of that consultation is the H.E.A.R. Active Ageing Consultation Outcome Report.

The state-wide consultations for a new Active Ageing Strategy were organised by the Council on the Ageing Tasmania (COTA Tasmania) with support from and collaboration with the Tasmanian Government.

Throughout the consultation, older Tasmanians identified good health, having enough money, having good relationships, and maintaining independence as both positively and negatively impacting on their quality of life and wellbeing.

Concerns about housing, cost of living and access to appropriate healthcare were among the top priorities in all areas COTA visited.

Similarly, access to and confidence with digital technology was frequently cited in the survey and community discussions as impacting people’s overall sense of connection and involvement in their communities

The consultation was funded by the Tasmanian Government and undertaken by COTA Tasmania between February and June this year.

Consultation activities included survey and postcard responses, community conversation groups, online sessions and text message input and several collaborations with community organisations to reach as many Tasmanians as possible.

The findings within the Outcome Report will inform the development of the Tasmanian Government's 2023-2029 Active Ageing Strategy.

Today people are living longer than previous generations. We are all ageing. Almost 180 000 Tasmanians (30.5%) of the population are expected to be over 65 years by 2060.

The Tasmanian Government’s vision is to build an age-friendly state in which all Tasmanians regardless of their age, can stay active, healthy, resilient and connected to their community and the economy.

To realise this vision, Tasmanians were asked for their opinion to help shape ageing in Tasmania and develop a new robust 2023-29 Tasmanian Active Ageing Strategy.
