Our Multicultural Island: Tasmania's Multicultural Policy and Action Plan

four children in a school vegetable gardenTasmania has a rich history of migration to our Island State.
Our Island is home to people born in 177 different countries and there are 159 identified languages spoken in Tasmanian homes. According to the 2021 Census, more than 81,669 Tasmanians were born overseas.

In recognition of this rich diversity, the Tasmanian Government has released Our Multicultural Island: Tasmania’s Multicultural Policy and Action Plan 2021-2023, which builds on the achievements of the 2014 Tasmanian Multicultural Policy and Multicultural Action Plan.

The Policy is accompanied by an Action Plan that sets out the specific actions that the Tasmanian Government will undertake to achieve the priorities of the Policy.

Under the Multicultural Action Plan 2021-2023, the Tasmanian Government committed to delivering measures to facilitate accessible services, increase economic opportunities, foster social inclusion and cohesion, and develop additional actions in response to, and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final report outlining our progress during 2021-23 is available below.

Consultation for Tasmania's Next Multicultural Action Plan

The new Action Plan will set out specific actions that the Tasmanian Government will take to achieve our vision for a Multicultural Tasmania.

Like our current Multicultural Action Plan, we want to ensure that our next Plan is informed by lived experience.

In partnership with the community, the Tasmanian Government completed state-wide consultation to inform the next Plan.

This consultation will help shape our understanding of what we need to do as a government to ensure that Tasmania remains an inclusive, harmonious and respectful multicultural island.

The public consultation survey has now closed.

More information on Tasmania's multicultural communities is available on the Multicultural Access Point website.
