When Philip Bonate, of Circular Head, Tasmania initially enlisted to serve in World War One, he was denied due to viscous veins. On a second attempt, Philip successfully enlisted with the 12th Battalion on 19 October 1915.
During active service, Company Sergeant Major Philip Bonhote demonstrated conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and was recommended for a Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Company Sergeant Major Philip Bonhote MM DCM was killed in action on 24 April 1918 at the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, Somme, France.
Mia Cooper, of Ogilvie High School, visited Company Sergeant Major Bonhote’s grave during the Frank MacDonald Study Tour 2019.
Mia, a distant cousin of Company Sergeant Major Bonhote, was the first family member to visit his grave.
Mia researched Company Sergeant Major Bonhote MM DCM for the study tour and wrote that she “felt a strong sense of pride and duty to the people in Tasmania who helped me gain such a connection to a man I never had the opportunity to meet”.
