National Agreement on Closing the Gap

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs in partnership with the Coalition of Peaks Representative, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre work to achieve better outcomes for Tasmanian Aboriginal people under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and the Tasmanian Implementation Plan 2021-2023. The Tasmanian Government is a signatory to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs works with other Tasmanian Aboriginal Community Control organisations and Aboriginal individuals and their families to further support better outcomes under the National Agreement and the Tasmanian Implementation Plan 2021-2023.

At the centre of the National Agreement are four Priority Reforms that focus on changing the way governments work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Priority Reforms

The Priority Reforms will:

  • Strengthen and establish formal partnerships and shared decision-making
  • Build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled sector
  • Transform government organisations so they work better for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Improve and share access to data and information to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities make informed decisions.

To implement the Agreement, a partnership between the State Government and Tasmanian Aboriginal people must be supported and strengthened.

The National Agreement recognises that Tasmanian Aboriginal people are best placed to determine and deliver services to meet their needs and cultural requirements.

Closing the Gap Capacity Building Funding Program

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs leads and supports Aboriginal Community Controlled Aboriginal Organisations with the Closing the Gap Capacity building Funding Program for the Tasmanian Government.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to delivering better outcomes for Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their families, in partnership with Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

The new National Agreement on Closing the Gap - developed in partnership between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - recognises that Aboriginal people are best placed to determine and deliver services to meet their needs and cultural requirements.

To achieve this priority, the Tasmanian Government has established the Closing the Gap Capacity Building Funding Program, with a total funding pool of $5.3 million. Funding will be available to Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations to build their capacity to co-design and deliver programs and services for Aboriginal people, by Aboriginal People.

The Closing the Gap Capacity Building Funding Program will be open from 5 May 2022 to 30 June 2023, and proposals can be submitted any time over this period.
