Eligibility for Government services

Like the Australian Government, the Tasmanian Government uses a three-part test to determine the eligibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs and services.

The three-part test requires a person to:

  1. have Aboriginal ancestry
  2. self-identify as an Aboriginal person
  3. be recognised as an Aboriginal person by the Aboriginal community in which they live or have lived.

People found to be eligible under the previous Tasmanian Government Policy on Eligibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specific Programs and Services are not required to complete the eligibility form to access programs and services.

Applicants need to complete an eligibility form for Tasmanian Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs and services (PDF 209.7KB).

Note: Eligibility to access Tasmanian Government Aboriginal Programs and Services does not determine Aboriginality. The Office of Aboriginal Affairs does not provide Certificates or any type of documentation to determine a person’s Aboriginality.

Tasmanian Government programs and services which only require self-identification will continue to only require self-identification. For example, Education and Health Services.
