Cultural Mutton birding

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs facilitates the annual mutton-birding at Fort Direction, South Arm for Tasmanian Aboriginal people to maintain their cultural practices, strengthen gatherings of people, yarning and cultural health and wellbeing. Mutton-birding is recognised and supported by the Tasmanian Government by issuing permits to Aboriginal people to undertake mutton birding for feeding birds and handing down and sharing cultural practices.

The Aboriginal community has undertaken cultural mutton-birding annually at Fort Direction, South Arm since 1999 through the permit system.

The Nature Conservation Act 2002 allows cultural practices on Aboriginal land without a permit or licence. Various permits are issued under the Act for cultural practices on other land.

Special Purposes Wildlife Permits (SPWP) to take muttonbird are issued under the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021 by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania.
