Private Louis James Imer is the great-great grandfather on Taleah Smith's maternal side. Taleah, a Parklands High School student, decided research Louis for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour in 2022 as she as intrigued by his story.
Louis Imer enlisted in Victoria for World War One on 17 January 1918, his 18th birthday.
Not long after arriving in Egypt, on 8 April 1918, Private Imer was admitted to the Suez Hospital where he was treated for measles. Private Imer spent 21 days in this hospital and was discharged and cleared for service on 29 April. Louis continued training in Egypt until he was admitted to the Bridge Clearing Hospital in Codford on 10 July, suffering an ingrown toenail. Two days later on the 12th he was cleared for service.
Private Imer also served on the Western Front and survived the deadly Battle of Fromelles.
When Private Imer returned from war, he met Violet Adelaide Bailey. The couple married on 24 June 1922 and had three children, Lawrence, Gloria and Bob.
