He Did His Duty

Curiosity about the street name, Lord Street, prompted Lachlan Rogers, of Taroona High School, to research the soldier, Private Herbert Lord, for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize.

Lachlan was able to follow in Private Lord’s footsteps within Hobart. Private Lord was born in Bellerive and attended The Hutchins School.

Private Lord, of the 40th Battalion, was wounded several times and eventually died from wounds.

Private Lord was buried alongside 10 771 other Commonwealth burials from World War One at the Etaples Military Cemetery, in France, where the inscription on his headstone reads “He Did His Duty”.
