Helpful Benjamin Hardy served in Australia

Rowan Wheeler, of MacKillop Catholic Collage, in Tasmania, decided to research Private Benjamin Gower Hardy for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour in 2022 because of a connection to his hometown, Cowra, in New South Wales.

Private Hardy was born in Sydney in 1898 and was known as a helpful neighbour who would repair neighbours' electronics and vehicles, and care for stray animals.

Due to his age, Private Hardy was deemed suitable to work on Australian soil rather than on the front lines.

On 12 February 1944 Private Hardy was transferred to the 22nd Garrison Battalion stationed at No. 12 Prisoner of War Camp, near Cowra, which housed prisoners from Japan, Italy, Formosa and Korea.

During the Cowra Breakout on 5 August 1944 Private Hardy and Private Ralph Jones were killed.  Both men were awarded the George Cross as recognition for their bravery during the Cowra breakout.
