James Harold Cleaver

James Harold CleaverGUNNER James Harold Cleaver was born in Launceston on 24 August 1889, one of 11 children to Sarah and John Cleaver. James was their fifth son, and spent his childhood in their home in Lyttleton St.  He later was employed as an ironmonger.

James enlisted on 10 October 1916, leaving behind his fiancée, Muriel. James' young brother Lewis enlisted a few weeks later.

After training, James arrived in France on 23 July 1917, and joined the 3rd Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery in Vieux-Berquin.

James' war experience was researched by Emma Cohen, who is an English, History and Geography teacher at Burnie High School.

Emma applied for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize when a former student was a recipient of the prize and had some encouragement from a colleague, who was also a recipient.  From a very young age Emma learnt about WWII and developed an interest in history through her grandfather’s stories. She discovered that two of her great-grandfathers (and other family members) served in Egypt and on The Western Front during The Great War.
