The story of Private Harold Elijah George was researched by his great-great-grandson, Harry Lillywhite. Harry is a student at Scotch Oakburn College. Harry and his family knew about Private Harold George's service in WW1.
Harold Elijah George MM was born on 5 April 1892, to William and Emma George in Hadspen, Tasmania. He led a typical childhood and early adulthood, living in Hadspen for most of, if not all, his adolescence. His job before the war was a labourer.
Harold enlisted at Pontville in August of 1914. He was 22 years old.
On 20 October, Harold embarked from Hobart to Alexandria on the S.S “Geelong”. Once arriving in Alexandria, his training begun, eventually embarking on the S.S “Devanha” from Alexandria on 2 March 1915 to join the Mediterranean expeditionary force and to fight on the Gallipoli peninsula.
