Corporal Michael Manion (pictured above left) was researched by The Honourable Kerry Finch MLC, Member for Rosevears (pictured right), for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour 2019.
The first major battle in France for the 26th Battalion, and Corporal Michael ‘Mick’ Manion, was around the town of Pozières, in France, between July and August 2016. For three days, 24 to 26 July 1916, the Germans relentlessly bombarded Pozières. The aim of this concentrated shelling was not simply to prepare for a counter-attack but to inflict as much damage and loss on the Australians as possible. Approaches to the village were also shelled. These approaches were vital for supplies, and for stretcher-bearers carrying the severely injured, to exit.
On 29 July 1916, Corporal Manion was reported ‘Missing in Action’. However, it wasn’t until September 1917, that the ANZAC Section 3rd Echelon G.H.Q. held a Court of Inquiry into Mick’s disappearance and finally declared that he was ‘Killed in Action’.
Meanwhile, Mick’s brother, Lance Corporal Arthur James Manion had managed to survive Gallipoli and rejoined the 3rd Light Horse Regiment as they proceeded to the Western Frontier; Palestine, this time on horseback. When Mick was declared missing at Pozieres, Arthur was heading towards the Battle of Romani.
The Honourable Kerry Finch MLC, the Independent Member for Rosevears, was the Parliament of Tasmania’s representative on the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour 2019. For the tour Mr Finch researched the military service of Corporal Michael Manion and the impact of military service on the Manion family. (PDF, 4.41MB)
