Charles Richard Martin was born 21 January 1884, in Harford Tasmania, and was researched by Bridie Latimer of Devonport High School for the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour 2022.
Before the outbreak of the First World War, Charles and his family lived and worked on a farm out in Harford as labourers. Their property resided next to Greens Creek. Bridie's grandfather’s family currently still owns and lives on that same property today.
When World War One was declared in Europe, Charles immediately enlisted to aid the war effort when Australia declared its alliance with Great Britain. Charles enlisted on 19 July 1915, aged 31 years old. Charles left Tasmania shortly after he enlisted, heading straight for Victoria; he would never return home to his family.
