Arthur Julias Stewart McCulloch
By researching Corporal Arthur McCulloch (left) from the Frank MacDonald Memorial Study Tour 2016, Burnie High School student, Amy Hicks (centre) felt she built a personal connection to the story of Corporal McCulloch and his family.
Telling the story of Arthur Julius Stewart McCulloch was one that proves difficulty, how do you tell the story of someone’s life, especially one cut so short? Brave Arthur never got to say goodbye to his loving mother, Elizabeth, who grieved the tragic loss of two sons in these brutal and bloody battles of World War One. It was not glorious, nor pleasant but sudden and anonymous. Too many brave young men were killed and every one of them would have had unspoken words they wished their loved ones could hear. Arthur survived ANZAC Cove and went on to the Western Front to continue his fight for our country. He died in the blood stricken dirt of Pozieres, France, with his grave never found. His mother’s despairing search for his grave, just to know where he is was vast and with no result.

Death report:
Reports say that Arthur was killed by shrapnel passing through his steel helmet at Pozieres. Only one person witnessed this event, Cpl. B.L. Scott, who said it occurred Monday July 24th while Arthur was sitting in the trenches at 9:30pm. Arthur died three days before his older brother William Lindsay McCulloch. Died on the same battlefield. Elizabeth (mother) tirelessly searched for his grave but with no success.
