Veterans Retreat Dago Point

the view of Lake Sorell A beautiful place on the shores of the Central Highlands’ Lake Sorell is available as a retreat for Tasmanian veterans.

The building was formerly a Parks and Wildlife Shack, which was re-purposed for Tasmanian veterans.

The Veterans Retreat Project was a 2018 Tasmanian Government election commitment to renovate and develop a retreat for veterans at a shack formerly used by staff of Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife (PWS) when they were working around Lake Sorell in the Central Highlands.

The Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Tasmania Branch (VVAA-T), numerous volunteers, businesses which donated equipment and materials, and a Tasmanian Government election commitment, all worked together to create the retreat for veterans, their families and friends.

The Retreat offers veterans a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful lake-side surroundings to support their long-term health.

The Tasmanian Government provided funding of $100,000 for the project. From the project start in July 2020 the VVAA-T held 64 working bees. 23 veterans attended at least one working bee.

The VVAA-T secured donations, sponsorships and in-kind support of $177 899 from Tasmanian businesses.

John Tucker, MP, Member for Lyons opened the retreat on behalf of the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Hon Guy Barnett MP.

During the 2021 State Election, the Government committed to increase the funding to the Project by an additional $100 000 to support a training centre and additional facilities being built on-site.
