Doone
Kennedy was the first woman to be elected Lord Mayor of Hobart. She served the
City of Hobart as Lord Mayor from 1986 to 1996, and as an Alderman from 1982 to
1999.
When standing for election as Lord Mayor in 1986, Mrs Kennedy supported beautification programs such tree planting along streetscapes and maintaining the Queen's Domain as open public space, along with promoting business in the city.
As Lord Mayor, Mrs Kennedy was a strong leader and popular with people from "all walks of life". The building of the Hobart Aquatic Centre was one of the major projects undertaken during her period as Lord Mayor. Mrs Kennedy was instrumental in securing funds to build the $17 million Aquatic Centre. When the Aquatic Centre first opened to the public she packed her bathers, joined the queue of early-risers and was one of the first to test the water after the doors opened at 6am.
Mrs Kennedy funded the refurbishment of the Hobart Town Hall chandeliers by running a fundraising appeal for the repairs and ensured the Lord Mayor's garden, which is visible from Argyle Street, was immaculately maintained. She also secured funding for bud lights to be installed in the plane trees on Salamanca Place.
Lorna Doone Pleasance Brewer was born in New South Wales in 1927. In 1947, at the age of 19, she transferred to Hobart through her work with the Bank of New South Wales. In Hobart she met John Kennedy, an ex-prisoner of war of the Japanese on the Thai Burma Railway. They married in 1949 and had two children. Her husband, John, was a Hobart City Council Alderman from 1970 to 1982.
Mrs Kennedy was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1994 for service to local government and the community.
Although Mrs Kennedy was a popular Lord Mayor who consistently polled 65 per cent of the votes in five elections, in 1996 she decided not to re-contest the position of Lord Mayor but served as an Alderman until 1999.
After leaving the Council, Mrs Kennedy continued her charity work. Her affiliations, either as board member, patron or president, included the: Mary Ogilvy Home Society Board, Narryna Heritage Museum Committee, Queen Alexandra Hospital Board, Hobart District Nursing Service, Trustees of Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Southern Regional Ambulance Service Advisory Council, Sudden Infant Death Society and Asthma Foundation.
Mrs Kennedy died at the age of 87 on 30 August 2014.
