Dame Mabel Flora Miller

(1906-1978)
First woman elected to Hobart City Council

Mabel Miller was an able and active public figure in Hobart for twenty years.

She was born in Broken Hill and came to Hobart in 1930. She was the first woman to be elected to the Hobart City Council (1952) followed by several terms as Deputy Lord Mayor (1954-56, 64-70).

In the political field her other achievements were:

• MHA for Franklin 1955-1964, she was one of the first two women elected to the House of Assembly
• A Federal Vice-President of the Liberal Party of Australia.
• 20 years with the Hobart City Council

As a Barrister-at-Law she was well prepared for her following achievements:

• High-ranking service in the WRAAF during the war
• Representative of Australia in the United Nations Association and as the Australian representative of the status of women to the United Nations Organisation from 1967-69.
• Service on the Commonwealth Government Committees for both the formation of the National Museum and Art Gallery and the Metric Conversion Board.

Her association with other organisations and committees included:

• Member of the Queen Alexandra Hospital committee
• Member of the C.W.A. and Red Cross
• Representative on the Royal Hobart Hospital Board
• Hobart Eisteddfod Society
• Patroness Hobart Ionian Club
• Patroness Tasmanian Amateur Athletic Women’s Association
• Tasmanian Right to Life Association
• Club member of the Girl Guides
• Past President of the National Council of Women
• Trustee Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
