Outdoor events

If you are organising an outdoor event, especially where temporary facilities, such as stalls and marquees are being constructed, you will need to consider a range of issues to ensure that people with mobility issues or vision impairments can easily and safely move around the event.

Wheelchair users often find that their path is inadvertently blocked by barriers erected as part of the event, such as stalls and road barriers being constructed in front of kerb ramps.

Checklist: Outdoor events

Have you:

• Designed the event layout to provide for the best access and circulation, noting the need for smooth, firm surfaces?
• Ensured stalls, performance areas and traffic-control barriers do not block kerb ramps or accessible paths of travel?
• Provided some monitored parking spaces close to the event entrance for people with disability?
• Considered providing monitored car parking spaces within the event space close to key facilities such as the main show ring or display areas at an agricultural show?
• Installed portable accessible toilets and first-aid facilities?
• Supplied occasional seating points in the shade?
• Designated areas for use by people using wheelchairs with good sight lines close to all stages and performance spaces?
• Where necessary, covered grassy areas with materials that make mobility easier?
• Ensured cables are secure and don’t present a trip hazard or impair movement by wheelchair users?
• Used signage that has high colour contrast between words or symbols and the background?
• Produced an ‘Access Map’ identifying key features for people with disability for the event and put the map and other access-related information online?
