Tasmanian Ministerial Multicultural Advisory Council – Call for members

Can you help shape the way the Tasmanian Government supports multicultural communities? We are seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians and organisations that work with communities to fill these important roles on the new Tasmanian Ministerial Multicultural Advisory Council (the Council).

The Council will play a key role in advising on implementing Embracing Diversity, Fostering Belonging: Tasmania’s Multicultural Action Plan 2025-2029.

There are five lived experience positions and two organisation representative roles available on the Council.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines cultural and linguistic diversity as groups and individuals who differ according to religion, language and ethnicity and whose ancestry is other than Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Celtic.

If you are a culturally or linguistically diverse Tasmanian and have a range of expertise and experience, consider applying for one of these roles. Culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians from regional and remote areas of the state are strongly encouraged to apply.

Members will provide advice to inform Tasmanian Government responses to issues and challenges faced by culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians. The Council will assist in the development and delivery of Tasmanian Government policy, programs and projects to ensure culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians are safe, can participate and feel they belong.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 16 January 2026.

The Council will play a key role in the implementation of Embracing Diversity, Fostering Belonging: Tasmania’s Multicultural Action Plan 2025-2029.

The Multicultural Action Plan implements the Tasmanian Government’s vision of a harmonious, inclusive and respectful multicultural island where all Tasmanians belong, and are enabled to contribute and achieve.

Meetings will be held twice per calendar year. Each meeting will be two hours in duration.

Who can be a community member of the Council?

Five Tasmanians that represent culturally and linguistically diverse lived experiences will be appointed, along with two members from organisations that work with culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians.

Cultural and linguistic diversity refers to groups and individuals who differ according to religion, language and ethnicity and whose ancestry is other than Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Celtic.

Applicants must meet these requirements to apply for a position on the Council.

What will the community members do?

Lived experience members

Lived experience members will be expected to use their experience to strategically contribute to outcomes that benefit a broad range of culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians.

Organisation representatives

Organisation representatives will be expected to share best practice on matters being discussed in the Council. This may include detailing the impacts of policy and programs on professional practice, workforce capacity and service design and delivery. They will be expected to liaise with other organisations to raise matters.

How long will lived experience and organisation members be appointed for?

As the Council is being established, members will be appointed for a two-year or three-year term this time, so that positions are staggered.

Members will have the option to be reappointed for a further two years.

Are community members paid to serve on the Council?

Membership of the Council is voluntary.

Eligible members will be remunerated for their participation and reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, in line with relevant Department of Premier and Cabinet policies and processes.

What if I need help to apply in English?

We encourage Tasmanians from linguistically diverse backgrounds to apply for these roles and they will be provided with language support to fulfil their duties.

Tasmanians that need help to apply in English can use the Google Translate function at the top of the page to translate the application questions into their language of choice.

Any member of the Council that needs support to communicate in English will be provided with language service assistance, such as an interpreter.
