Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council – Call for members

Can you help shape the way the Tasmanian Government supports older Tasmanians? We are seeking expressions of interest (EoI) from older Tasmanians and organisations that work with older Tasmanians to fill these important roles on the new Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council (the Council).

The Council will play a key role in advising on implementing A Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025-2029. There are five lived experience positions and two roles for representatives from organisations that work with older Tasmanians available on the Council.

Consistent with the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ definition and the Aged Care Act 2024, an older person is aged 65 and over, or aged 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

If you are an older Tasmanian with a range of expertise and experience that you would like to share, please consider applying for one of these roles. Applications are encouraged from older Tasmanians in regional and remote areas, older Tasmanian Aboriginal people, culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians, LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians and Tasmanians with disability.

Members will provide advice to inform Tasmanian Government responses to issues and challenges experienced by older Tasmanians. The Council will assist in the development and delivery of Tasmanian Government policy, programs and projects to ensure older Tasmanians are valued, connected and supported.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 27 January 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council do?

The Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council (the Council) will be a reference point for the Tasmanian Government on issues affecting older Tasmanians.

The Council will play a key role in the implementation of A Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025-2029.

The Older Tasmanians Action Plan implements the Tasmanian Government’s vision of a respectful, age-friendly island where older Tasmanians are valued, connected and supported.

The Council will:

  • Provide advice to the Tasmanian Government on the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting on the Plan.
  • Provide expert advice to inform Tasmanian Government responses to issues and challenges faced by older Tasmanians.
  • Provide feedback on Tasmanian Government policies, programs, services and initiatives that address and respond to issues experienced by older Tasmanians.
  • Identify systemic issues faced by older Tasmanians and the services that support them.
  • Support the sharing of information between the Tasmanian Government, Australian Government and key organisations that work with older Tasmanians.
How will the Council work?

Meetings will be held twice per calendar year. Each meeting will be two hours in duration.

Meeting locations will alternate between Hobart and regional centres, and members can attend meetings online via Microsoft Teams or in‑person.

Out-of-session business, such as reading documents, providing feedback and liaising with networks will be needed in between meetings.

Who is on the Council?

Members on the Council are:

  • The Minister for Ageing (Chair)
  • Council on the Ageing Tasmania (COTA Tasmania)
  • Five older Tasmanians
  • Two representatives from organisations that work with older Tasmanians
  • Tasmanian Government agencies
    • Department of Premier and Cabinet
    • Department of Health
    • Department of Justice
    • Department of State Growth
  • Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
Who can be a community member on the Council?

Five older Tasmanians will be appointed as members, along with two members from organisations that work with older Tasmanians.

Older Tasmanians are aged 65 years and over, or aged 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Applicants must meet this age requirement to apply for a position on the Council.

What will the community members do?

Lived experience members

Lived experience members will be expected to use their experience to strategically contribute to outcomes that benefit a broad range of older Tasmanians.

Organisation representatives

Organisation representatives will be expected to share best practice on matters being discussed in the Council. This may include detailing the impacts of policy and programs on professional practice, workforce capacity and service design and delivery. They will be expected to liaise with other organisations to raise matters.

How long will lived experience and organisation members be appointed for?

As the Council is being established, members will be appointed for a two-year or three-year term this time, so that positions are staggered.

Members will have the option to be reappointed for a further two years.

Are community members paid to serve on the Council?

Membership of the Council is voluntary.

Eligible members will be remunerated for their participation and reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, in line with relevant Department of Premier and Cabinet policies and processes.

What if I need help to apply?

We encourage Tasmanians from diverse backgrounds to apply for these roles.

Support will be arranged for any Council members who require it, for example by attending with a support person, or an interpreter.
