Harry completed school in Queensland before joining the Royal Australian Navy in the early 1970’s. He spent the next 12 years in various roles (mainly on sea-going vessels) learning basic management and leadership skills. In the mid 1980’s he was transferred to Navy Headquarters Canberra where he held a number of positions in organisational development.
In 1990, while on study leave, Harry joined a consultancy group which was responsible for developing and implementing a business improvement and multi-skilling strategy for BHP Slab and Plate at Port Kembla in Wollongong. This project restructured 250 different work trades into just seven. Harry still has fond memories of the complexities of this project and the communication issues associated with conversing with the many employees whose first language was not English.
The BHP experience convinced Harry of the value of having well-developed business management practices to achieve success, and in 1993 Harry was accepted by the Department of Defence and the Institute of Industrial Engineers as a qualified work study practitioner. Harry was involved in several Defence administrative, staffing and organisational reviews. In 1995 Harry was awarded a Diploma in Management Systems Analysis and became National Manager of the Navy Corporate Development Organisation.
Harry left the Navy in 1998 and moved to Hobart with his wife Jillian. Harry has held many positions using his business management systems knowledge and experience working for a Tasmanian state-owned utility company as the Manager Business Improvement and later taking up a position with The Salvation Army (TSA) as the Tasmanian State Manager Continuous Quality Improvement.
Harry left full-time work in in 2017 on specialist advice to concentrate on his physical and mental health because of his earlier Defence Service. Fortunately, because of obtaining good professional help when needed and having supportive and understanding work colleagues and friends, Harry has decided it is time for him to give back to the people who helped him by assisting others. Harry now volunteers helping community service organisations to deliver better outcomes for the many needy people within his local community.
Harry welcomes the challenges of the Veterans’ Reference Group position and the opportunity to work with people dedicated to ensuring present and past Defence members are adequately recognised, remembered and where applicable, compensated, for their selfless contributions over the years.
