Reducing our transport emissions
This priority area aims to reduce transport emissions by promoting the uptake of electric vehicles and alternative forms of transport, and optimising the use of existing vehicles.

3.1 | Assess potential approaches for a market-led statewide rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and work with local government, businesses and industry to improve charging network infrastructure in Tasmania | Expected completion FY 2019-20 | DPAC (TCCO) | The Electric Vehicle ChargeSmart Grants Program has provided over $600,000 in grant funding to expand the rollout of a statewide electric vehicle charging network for local users and visitors. The charging infrastructure supported through the Grants Program includes 14 fast charging stations at strategic locations across the State. This includes the installation of four ultra-fast 350kW charging stations capable of charging the next generation of electric vehicles in less than 10 minutes. The Grants Program has also supported the installation of over 20 destination charging stations at councils, businesses and visitor destinations. With the inclusion of contributions by recipients, ChargeSmart will stimulate a total spend of over $2.5 million to install electric vehicle fast charging infrastructure across the State. | Nearing completion |
3.2 | Establish an electric vehicle working group to identify barriers, issues and opportunities, and provide advice to the Tasmanian Government on the development of a coordinated approach to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Tasmania | Ongoing | DPAC (TCCO) | The Tasmanian Government Electric Vehicle Working Group was established in October 2017. The Working Group continues to bring together key partners to develop a coordinated approach to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Tasmania. The Working Group is also identifying and progressing priority areas of action to support electric vehicle uptake; and identifying and exploring barriers to electric vehicle uptake. The Working Group was nationally recognised in 2019, winning the inaugural Kennedy Award at the 2019 Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Sector Management. The Tasmanian Government has supported a variety of events to increase community awareness of electric vehicles. For example, the Government has sponsored two community electric vehicle ‘try and drive’ events, two Electric Bike Expos and a driverless electric bus demonstration. | Ongoing |
3.3 | Extend the Smarter Fleets program to improve the efficiency of heavy vehicle fleets and additional light vehicle fleets | Expected completion FY 2019-20 | DPAC (TCCO) | The Tasmanian Government’s Smarter Fleets Program aims to reduce vehicle fleet greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs by providing tailored guidance and support to fleet managers. The Smarter Fleets Program - Heavy Vehicles supported six heavy vehicle fleets in Tasmania to improve efficiency, reduce fuel expenditure and carbon emissions and to consider alternative technology, including hydrogen and electric vehicles. The Smarter Fleets Program - Electric Vehicles in Local Government supported nine Tasmanian councils to prepare to introduce electric vehicles into their fleets. The Program includes an analysis of the existing fleet to calculate the environmental benefit and cost reductions that electric vehicles can offer. | Nearing completion |

Due to COVID-19, the new North-West bus network rollout scheduled for April 2020 has been deferred until 2021. As part of the Hobart City Deal, two new Park and Ride facilities are being developed in Kingborough with additional trial bus services to be put in place to encourage uptake. 3.5 | Improve the efficiency of the Tasmanian Government transport fleet by extending the Smarter Fleets program, reviewing the Green Vehicle Guide minimum standards, and identifying and addressing barriers to the uptake of electric vehicles in the Government fleet | Ongoing | DPAC (TCCO) | The Smarter Fleets Program – Electric Vehicles in the Tasmanian Government supported Tasmanian Government agencies to prepare to integrate electric vehicles in their fleets. The Program analysed the existing fleet and identified practical solutions and options to support electric vehicle uptake. A review of the Tasmanian Government’s fleet emissions standards is underway. The review aims to improve the efficiency of the fleet by replacing higher-emitting vehicles with more efficient vehicle equivalents, including hybrids. | Ongoing |
