Timeframes and Scope

Timeframes

The response to the COVID-19 pandemic emergency has impacted timelines for the Review.  Adjusted timeframes have been confirmed and are detailed in the diagram below.  Consultation on a draft Local Government Bill will occur in early 2021, with a new Local Government Bill expected to be introduced to Parliament in the third quarter of 2021.  To ensure adequate time for consultation with stakeholders and implementation of reforms, a draft Local Government (Elections) Bill will be released for consultation following passage of the Local Government Bill.

The Review will be conducted over four phases, as outlined in the diagram below.

There will be a number of opportunities for the community, the local government sector and other stakeholders to be involved in consultation through forums and the release of consultation papers at various stages. Consultation at the highest levels of Government will also occur, with the Review being a standing item on the Premier’s Local Government Council agenda.
