Climate Action 21 - Implementation Plan

Climate Action 21: Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan 2017-2021 (Climate Action 21) sets the Tasmanian Government’s agenda for action on climate change through to 2021. It reflects the Government’s commitment to addressing the critical issues of climate change and articulates how Tasmania will play its role in the global response to climate change. Underpinning Climate Action 21 is a commitment to establish a long-term target to achieve zero net emissions for Tasmania by 2050.

Climate Action 21 was developed with input from the Tasmanian community, businesses, local government and the scientific community.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet’s Tasmanian Climate Change Office (TCCO) is responsible for coordinating the implementation of Climate Action 21.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $3 million in new funds to support the delivery of Climate Action 21. This builds on over $400 million already committed to action on climate change, including a comprehensive targeted fuel reduction burning program, the Tasmanian Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme, modernisations and upgrades to renewable hydro-electric assets, and investment in irrigation infrastructure to provide greater surety to farmers in a dry climate.

Implementation Plan

The purpose of the Implementation Plan is to guide the delivery of the 37 actions contained in Climate Action 21. The Implementation Plan outlines timeframes for each action and identifies the benefits that will be achieved by taking action.

Adaptive Management Framework

The implementation of Climate Action 21 will be informed by an adaptive management approach to ensure effective outcomes.

We will:

  • consider the best available evidence as projects are developed;
  • be informed by a contemporary understanding of climate science;
  • assess and respond to risks and opportunities; and
  • establish effective methods and timeframes for evaluation and review.

Working together

The TCCO will implement Climate Action 21 in collaboration with all levels of government, non-government organisations, business and industry, the scientific community, peak organisations and the broader Tasmanian community.

The Implementation Plan outlines the key partners the Tasmanian Government will work with to deliver each action.

We will:

  • seek the views of others to inform the scope and delivery of projects;
  • monitor and report publicly on progress; and
  • share information and learnings with others.

Monitoring and reporting

Each year, TCCO will release a report card on progress against Climate Action 21 showing the status progress against each action. TCCO will also determine whether the actions are effective by undertaking a monitoring and evaluation program.

Read the Climate Action 21 Report Card 2018.

Information and learnings relating to the implementation of Climate Action 21 will also be shared publicly through the TCCO website, Facebook page and subscriber newsletter.
