Employment Directions relate to the administration of the State Service and employment matters relevant to the State Service Act.
ED1 - Employment in the State Service
This direction details procedures and minimum requirements in relation to employment in the State Service.

This direction ensures all State Service officers and employees understand their responsibilities in relation to the State Service Principles. It sets out the minimum requirements that a head of agency must meet in upholding, promoting and ensuring adherence to the principles and the minimum requirements officers and employees must meet in upholding the principles.
ED4 - Procedure for the Suspension of State Service Employees With or Without Pay
This direction sets out the basic requirements for suspension of a State Service employee either with or without pay.
ED5 - Procedures for the Investigation and Determination of Whether an Employee has Breached the Code of Conduct
This direction sets out the procedures for the investigation and determination of whether an employee, senior executive, equivalent specialist or prescribed officer has breached the State Service Code of Conduct. A determination that an employee has breached the code may only be made in accordance with these procedures.

This direction establishes the procedures for the investigation and determination of whether an employee, senior executive, equivalent specialist or prescribed officer is able to efficiently and effectively perform their duties.
A finding that an employee is unable to efficiently and effectively perform their duties may only be made in accordance with these procedures. These procedures do not apply to the ability of heads of agency to perform their duties.
ED7 - Pre-employment Checks
This direction outlines the policy and procedure in relation to pre-employment checks within the State Service. These include:
- conviction checks
- identity checks
- disciplinary action in previous employment checks.
ED9 - Change of Employment Status of Fixed-Term Teachers to Permanent
This direction specifies the criteria and requirements for an application to change the employment status of an eligible fixed-term teacher in the Department for Education, Children and Young People to permanent.
ED10 - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tagged and Identified Positions
This direction specifies the criteria for the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Tasmanian State Service in specific positions.
ED11 - Statements of Duties
This direction specifies minimum criteria relating to statements of duties.
ED12 - Internet and Email Use by State Service Officers and Employees
This direction provides clarity in relation to the appropriate use of internet and email facilities. Agencies are required to develop and implement appropriate guidelines and user agreements that give effect to the requirements of this direction.
ED13 - Pay Advice Details
This direction details the pay advice required to be provided to all employees.
ED14 - Teaching Service (Tasmanian Public Sector) Award
This direction outlines arrangements in relation to recreation leave and additional personal leave to a range of teaching employees.
ED15 - Leave and Related Arrangements for Emergency Service Volunteers
This direction details leave and related arrangements for State Service employees who are a registered volunteer in a specified emergency service organisation.
ED16 - Indemnity and Legal Assistance
This direction specifies the circumstances in which indemnity and legal assistance may be granted to employees and officers, including heads of agency.

This direction details administrative arrangements and requirements that apply to Senior Executive Service (SES) officers, equivalent specialists and prescribed officeholders.

This direction is focused on employees who are likely to be absent from work for a significant period of time, starting from an absence of more than five working days.
Ministerial Directions
From 2013, Employment Directions replaced Commissioner's Directions and a number of Ministerial Directions.
Some Ministerial Directions currently remain in place and are being progressively transferred into awards or agreements or reissued as Employment Directions.

This direction specifies certain administrative procedures and monetary entitlements.
MD2 - Work Arrangements and Leave
This direction specifies certain administrative procedures and monetary entitlements in relation to work arrangements and leave.
MD5 - Tasmanian Fire Fighting Industry Employees Award 1995
This direction specifies entitlements and administrative procedures in relation to part-time employees for persons covered by the Tasmanian Fire Fighting Industry Employees Award 1995.
MD6 - Nurses (Tasmanian Public Sector) Award 1992
This direction specifies entitlements and administrative procedures in relation to calculation of salary and certain types of leave for persons employed or appointed under the Nurses (Tasmanian Public Sector) Award 1992.
MD7 - Transport
This direction specifies entitlements and administrative procedures in relation to employees covered by the Minister for Public Sector Administration and the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical, and Services Union (Tasmanian Authorities and Services Branch) Agreement 1996.
MD21 - Travel and Relocation Assistance with Respect to Appointment, Promotion or Assignment of Duties for Officers and Employees
The minister has determined the terms of reimbursement of costs with respect to appointment, promotion or assignment of duties involving relocation are to be assessed and approved by heads of agency based on reasonable and demonstrated expenses.
