Celebrating professional milestones and achievements
The Premier's long service recognition acknowledges Tasmanian Government employees who have reached the significant milestone of 40 or 50 years of public service.
Each year, the Department of Premier and Cabinet works with government departments, Government Business Enterprises and State-owned Companies to identify employees who have achieved these service milestones.
Employees are invited to attend a formal presentation event and are presented with certificates by the Premier.
Individual departments also present their own service awards at the agency level. The awards offered differ from organisation to organisation, but often include 20, 25 and 35 years of service. Visit your organisation's intranet for more information on these arrangements.
How do you know when I've reached my service milestone?
Each year, Tasmanian Government departments, Government Business Enterprises and State-owned Companies provide details of employees who reached 40 or 50 years of service during the previous calendar year to the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
When will I be recognised?
Recipients are identified based on milestone anniversaries reached during the previous calendar year. This approach ensures all eligible employees are recognised consistently.
I have also worked for another Australian Government jurisdiction, am I still eligible?
Yes. Continuous service that culminates in employment with the Tasmanian Government may be counted towards eligibility. This includes service with Commonwealth, state and territory governments.
Can I decline recognition and participate in the future?
Yes. You may choose to be included in a future year's program.
I have recently retired, am I still eligible?
Yes. Tasmanian Government employees who reached a 40 or 50 year service milestone before retiring are eligible for recognition.
What do I receive when recognised?
As well as an invitation to a formal reception event in your region, you receive:
- a gift voucher for a local Tasmanian business (you will be provided with a list of businesses to select from or you may choose a donation to charity in your name of an equivalent value)
- a commemorative pin
- a certificate.
Do I need to attend the reception event to receive my recognition?
No. We understand not everyone wishes to receive recognition at a formal event. If you do not wish to attend, your chosen gifts will be sent to you.
When are the reception events held?
Events are held annually between September and October in each region of the state (North-West, North and South). While dates may occasionally change due to operational requirements, invitations are usually sent at least three weeks before the event.
What happens at the reception event?
The Premier (or their representative) hosts the event, typically on a weekday afternoon. You and your plus-one guest mingle with fellow recipients and share light refreshments before the formal proceedings. Each recipient is called in turn to collect their certificate and pin and pose for a photograph with the Premier. The photographer is available to take family photos or group shots of you and your colleagues after the formalities.
