Child Safety Reform Implementation Monitor Bill 2024

Public consultation

About the Draft Legislation

The Tasmanian Government is implementing a comprehensive program of system-wide reform to improve the way our agencies respond to and protect Tasmanian children and young people from child sexual abuse. Legislative change is an important part of this work.

The reform program is consistent with and in response to the recommendations of recent national and state commissions and inquiries into child sexual abuse, including the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Response to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.

To ensure high levels of public transparency and accountability, new legislation has been drafted to enable the appointment of an independent person to monitor and report directly to Parliament on the progress and effectiveness of the reform program.

The draft legislation provides for creation of the role of independent monitor, and establishes that person’s role, including functions, powers, reporting arrangements and objectives.

Before the draft legislation (Bill) is finalised for parliamentary consideration and debate, all members of the public are invited to provide written submissions of feedback. The draft legislation and supporting information are attached below.
