Local Government Board Review - Sorell and Tasman Councils

Local Government Board final report

On 3 August 2018, the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Peter Gutwein MP, published the Local Government Board's Final Report: Review of Voluntary Amalgamation and Shared Services Options for the Sorell and Tasman Councils.

The Board recommended that the Sorell and Tasman Councils pursue voluntary amalgamation, because of the potential to deliver a range of financial and strategic benefits for the Councils and the community. The Board received 55 submissions and a petition for the Review and these are available for your information.

The Minister initiated the Review at the request of the Sorell and Tasman Councils. In undertaking the Review, the Board engaged independent consultants to provide expert advice and analysis, and undertook significant consultation with councils, other stakeholders and the broader community.

It is the Tasmanian Government’s view that any changes must be driven and supported by the local communities themselves.

Tasman Council Elector Poll

In August 2018 the Sorell Council voted unanimously in favour of amalgamation and the then Tasman Council narrowly voted against amalgamation.

After the 2018 local government elections the Tasman Council asked the Tasmanian Electoral Commission to conduct an Elector Poll in March 2019 to resolve the issue of whether or not it would amalgamate with Sorell Council.

The Tasman Elector Poll resulted in an no vote of 68.63 per cent for the amalgamation.
