Salmon Industry Study
In August 2025, the Tasmanian Government committed to commissioning an independent study of the Tasmanian salmon industry to ensure its long‑term sustainability and environmental efficacy.
On 27 October 2025, the Government announced the terms of reference for the salmon industry study. Following further consultation, updated terms of reference were finalised on 30 October 2025.

The independent study will examine whether Tasmania’s regulatory arrangements are effective in achieving sustainable development, while protecting the State’s marine and freshwater environments.
It will benchmark Tasmania’s regulatory framework, examine monitoring, compliance, penalties, biosecurity, animal welfare and environmental performance standards.
Next Steps
The study will be delivered in two phases through 2026. The immediate next step is to engage a study lead. Further updates will be provided on this page as the study progresses, with all findings and data to be publicly released.
