To whom it may concern,

I had the following concerns re handling of the attitude toward COVID-19 and the ensuing outbreak in March/April 2020 at the NWRH

1. I work in Spencer Clinic and was concerned re the number of staff in a small room for handover. I suggested we use a larger tutorial room for handover so that staff could spread out more. It occurred once and after that was opposed by certain staff saying we needed to be on the main ward. Handover was then predominantly carried out in the smaller room.

2. Staff were still crowding into the nurses station office and were blasé about counting numbers of people in the office.

3. A locum psychiatrist flew in from Melbourne and arrived late at the multidisciplinary morning meeting. He sat through the entire meeting without a mask.

4. Prior to the outbreak we never received any education from the Infection Control Nurse for the hospital.

5. Despite directives to try and work from home if possible, certain staff applied and would have been suitable to adequately carry out duties from home. Nobody was approved from Statewdie Mental Health Services to work from home.  One nurse used her own long service leave instead so that she could supervise her children at home.

6. A blase attitude from some staff who still gave each other a hug on greeting each other.

7. A very poor culture toward sick leave being taken from management, whereby if someone rang in sick they would roll their eyes and make comments. Therefore staff were reluctant to take sick leave, always being told how short staffed we were.

8. Upon completion of the PPE online mandatory training, staff arrived at the ward to complete the face to face training.  They were all confused to find the CNE for mental health services NW had changed the order of donning the PPE as opposed to the National Guidelines.

9. During the lockdown there was absolutely no contact made to staff the entire time.

This caused uncertainty and stress.

Thankyou for the opportunity to submit my concerns.

Yours Faithfully,
