Celebrating professional milestones and achievements in the Tasmanian State Service
The Premier's Long Service Recognition acknowledges Tasmanian Government employees who have reached the significant milestone of 40 or 50 years of public service.
Each year, the Department of Premier and Cabinet works with government departments, Government Business Enterprises and State-owned Companies to identify employees who have achieved these service milestones.
Employees are invited to attend a formal presentation event and are presented with certificates by the Premier.
Individual departments also present their own service awards at the agency level. The awards offered differ from organisation to organisation but often include 20, 25 and 35 years of service. Please visit your organisations intranet for more information on these arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
How do you know when I've reached my service milestone?
Each year, DPAC contacts Tasmanian Government departments, Government Business Enterprises and State-owned Companies to collect details of employees who reached 40 or 50 years of service during the previous calendar year.
When will I be recognised?
Recognition recipients are identified based on milestone anniversaries reached during the previous calendar year. This approach ensures all eligible employees are recognised consistently.
I have also worked for another Australian Government jurisdiction, am I still eligible?
Yes. Continuous service that culminates in employment with the Tasmanian Government may be counted towards eligibility. This includes service with Commonwealth, state and territory governments.
Can I decline recognition this year and participate in the future?
Yes. If you would prefer not to participate this year, you may choose to be included in a future years program.
I have recently retired, am I still eligible?
Yes. Employees who reached a 40 or 50-year service milestone before retiring remain eligible for recognition.
What do I receive when recognised?
- A gift voucher for a local Tasmanian business (you will be provided with a list of businesses to select from. You may also choose a donation to charity in your name of an equivalent value)
- Commemorative pin
- Certificate
- Invitation to a formal reception event in your region
Do I need to attend the function to receive my gifts?
No. We understand that not everyone wishes to receive recognition at a formal event. If you don't wish to attend we will send your chosen gifts directly to you.
When are the functions held?
Events are held annually between September and October in each region of the state - Northwest, North and South. While dates may occasionally change due to operational requirements, invitations are usually issued at least three weeks before the event.
What happens at the function?
The Premier (or their representative) hosts the 1.5 - 2 hour event, typically on a weekday afternoon. You and a plus-one mingle with fellow recipients, share light refreshments before being seated for the formal proceedings. Each recipient is called in turn to collect their certificate and pin and pose for a professional photograph with the Premier. The photographer is then available to take family photos or group shots of you and your colleagues following the formalities.
