Women in leadership and on boards
Support for women looking to lead
Explore the steps you can take to find more board and leadership opportunities. You can also access support and information you may need to move into these roles.
Sign up to the Tasmanian Women's Register
Subscribe to the Tasmanian Women’s Register to receive email notifications about board and committee vacancies.
When first established, the register was only for Tasmanian Government board and committee vacancies. From 2026, the Tasmanian Women’s Register has been expanded to include non‑government boards and committees. This means more organisations can use the register to advertise their vacancies to women across Tasmania and improve the diversity of their boards and committees.
Note: The Tasmanian Women’s Register does not receive every board or committee vacancy. You will only get emails about opportunities that agencies and organisations send to the register for sharing.
Leadership scholarship opportunities
The Tasmanian Government funds 40 scholarship positions each year to support women to access leadership training, mentoring and support, particularly women working in male-dominated industries and from diverse backgrounds.
The 2025 scholarship program was delivered by Tasmanian Leaders through its I-LEAD Women in Industry program.
If you are interested in your organisation delivering these scholarships through the Delivering the Tasmanian Women’s Leadership Scholarship Grants Program, sign up to receive grant alerts via email to be notified when this program opens next.

Applications close Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
Tasmanian Railway Pty Ltd (TasRail) is one of the largest freight providers in Tasmania, connecting industry and commerce to major shipping ports and freight hubs across the State. As a State-owned vertically-integrated Company, TasRail is responsible for both Below Rail and Above Rail assets including freight terminals, shiploading and bulk handling facilities and is commercially focused and committed to delivering optimal and innovative logistic solutions to its customers.
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a highly regarded and influential leader to serve as Chairperson of the TasRail Board. TasRail continues to undertake major rail infrastructure works across the network as part of the Tasmanian Rail Revitalisation Program, alongside further development of its shiploading assets and infrastructure at the Port of Burnie.
The successful candidate will bring a high level of credibility and experience at Board and senior executive levels, with sound commercial judgement and an ability to navigate a complex operational environment. They will be an accomplished leader, committed to high standards of governance and able to build constructive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders to support TasRail’s strategy for a sustainable future.

Advice for leaders
Importance of workplace gender equality
Workplace gender equality means people have fair access to jobs, pay, opportunities and flexibility, regardless of gender. While Australia has made progress, women still earn less and advance less over their careers, and men often have less access to parental leave or flexible work.
Gender pay gap
The gender pay gap is the difference between the average pay of women and the average pay of men across a workplace, industry or the whole economy. It does not mean women and men are paid different amounts for doing the same job. This is called equal pay and has been a legal requirement in Australia since 1969.
Gender equality action plan
Having a clear plan helps turn good intentions into real action. A good plan might include actions like reviewing recruitment practices, improving flexible work options or increasing women’s representation in leadership roles.
Find out more about workplace gender equality, the gender pay gap and action planning at the Australian Government Workplace Gender Equality Agency website.
