A pathway forward

The Tasmanian Government is committed to a Tasmanian Aboriginal-led truth-telling process, as outlined in Tasmania's Plan for Closing the Gap 2025–2028. Tasmania's truth-telling process is likely to focus on actions that prioritise education, storytelling and knowledge sharing, and strengthening relationships and trust between Tasmanian Aboriginal people and the broader Tasmanian community.

Aboriginal Advisory Group for Truth-Telling and Treaty

In 2021, Tasmanian Aboriginal people welcomed the announcement by the government that a truth-telling and treaty process would start in Tasmania. The consultations with Tasmanian Aboriginal people led to 24 recommendations in the Pathway to Truth-Telling and Treaty Report.

An Aboriginal Advisory Group was established to deliver strategic Aboriginal advice to the Tasmanian Government. This advice informs decisions and whole-of-government policy about working towards truth-telling and treaty with Tasmanian Aboriginal people. The advisory group has completed its role for the government. It held its final meeting in May 2025.
