Working together with our partners

The Tasmanian Government and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre as Tasmania’s Coalition of Peaks member, signed the National Agreement on Closing the Gap in 2020. The agreement aims to enable Aboriginal people and governments to work together to overcome the inequality experienced by Aboriginal people and achieve life outcomes equal to all Australians.

Closing the Gap in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government works with its Coalition of Peaks partner (the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre) and other Tasmanian Aboriginal organsations and people to implement the National Agreement on Closing the Gap in Tasmania.

Through the national agreement, the Tasmanian Government has committed to partnerships with Aboriginal people in policy and shared decision-making over the way programs and services for Aboriginal people are designed, delivered, monitored and evaluated.

The national agreement applies to all government organisations in Tasmanian without exception. This includes Australian Government and local government organisations, and organisations that receive government funding in Tasmania.

Priority reforms

At the centre of the national agreement are four priority reforms that focus on changing the way governments work with Aboriginal people. The priority reforms will:

  1. Strengthen and establish formal partnerships and shared decision-making with Aboriginal people.
  2. Build the Aboriginal community-controlled sector.
  3. Transform government organisations so they work better for Aboriginal people.
  4. Improve and share access to data and information to enable Aboriginal communities to make informed decisions and support achievement of the other three priority reforms.

By signing the national agreement, the Tasmanian Government committed to the priority reforms and recognised that closing the gap in life outcomes between Tasmanian Aboriginal people and the whole Tasmanian community will only be achieved when Aboriginal people are genuine partners in the design and delivery of policy, programs and services that are relevant to them.
