TSS Employee Survey Results 2024 (12 Aug 2024)

Hello everyone

Earlier this year you were invited to participate in the TSS Employee Survey 2024, and it was great to see more than 10,000 employees shared their thoughts and feedback on working within the Tasmanian State Service.

I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey, with two thirds of the agencies achieving response rates of more than 50 per cent, and a total response rate of 26 per cent across Agencies.  Your feedback helps determine the future focus of our people and culture related priorities.

I am encouraged this year to see the positive results around the awareness of work health and safety management systems, that health safety and wellbeing topics and priorities are regularly discussed in teams, and that access for employees to both opportunities and resources to support their health and wellbeing have improved.  Our commitment and actions towards healthy, safe workplaces to support our employees to deliver services to the Tasmanian community is a key priority for me as Head of the State Service.

We also saw positive results regarding employees’ experience working in teams, as well as regarding respondent’s direct managers, with more than 80 per cent feeling confident to approach their manager to discuss concerns. There has also been an increase in the number of respondents accessing flexible working arrangements from 39 per cent in 2020, to 49 per cent in 2024.

While it’s important to acknowledge the gains we have made, we must continue to improve the employee experience within the Tasmanian State Service. The number of individuals who experienced workplace bullying or sexual harassment remains the same as 2023.  Whilst there was a slight increase in the number of respondents that are confident of being protected from reprisal for reporting improper conduct, continued work is needed to further understand and address the barriers to reporting. I am personally committed to ensuring we continue the important work in Agencies to address positive workplace behaviours and speak up when it’s not right.

The results also showed we have scope for improvement around our diversity, equity and inclusion indicators, with some indicators increasing and others declining, indicating we must continue the conversation and positive actions to improve this. Positively supporting increases in diversity, equity and inclusion are critically important for our State Service as we work to reflect and meet the needs of our changing Tasmanian community.

You can access the full TSS Whole-of-Service Results and Highlights Report by visiting the DPAC website. Here you will also find a snapshot of the Whole-of-Service results, along with some observations of the key areas covered.

What happens next?

Agency-specific results will be available shortly and your agency will share these with you.

Over the coming weeks action plans for agencies and the Whole-of-Service will be developed, and you can expect to hear more about how we will respond to your feedback during September.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in the survey. Your valuable feedback enables us to work towards creating an even better working environment for everyone in the Tasmanian State Service and one that we can all continue to be very proud of.

Kind regards
