Hi everyone

Today, the Premier has tabled the Tasmanian State Service Annual Report 2023-24 in Parliament and I am pleased to share this as my first Report as the Head of the State Service.

Firstly, I wish to acknowledge the significant legacy of my predecessor Ms Jenny Gale, the Head of the State Service for her contribution to the Tasmanian State Service, her commitment to diversity in the sector and her tireless commitment to a better State Service.

I am committed to creating a culture across government that upholds and values integrity, positive workplace cultures, capability building, and learning together through sharing good practice. I am incredibly proud of the Tasmanian State Service and the work that each one of us does to deliver services for our community. Our work is challenging but incredibly rewarding. I take this moment to thank all State Service employees who work every day with a commitment to excellence, integrity, openness and transparency.

This Report provides insights into key dimensions of our workforce. The Report highlights the diversity of our workforce, the work we have been undertaking together to address issues that matter to us in the Employee Survey, and the work to address the key reforms of the Commission of Inquiry.

The safety and wellbeing of children and young people is the highest priority for the Tasmanian Government. There is nothing more important than ensuring those who are vulnerable or at risk have the support they need and are protected in our community.

I recognise the importance of this moment in time, a time where we must remain humble, challenge ourselves and each other to ensure we are truly reforming and not just implementing the Commission of Inquiry’s recommendations. The commitment from our heads of agencies to work together and be guided by the voices and experiences of those who have suffered abuse is a significant step. Driving reform, cultural change, greater accountability, integrity and trustworthiness through action is how we will show we are committed to reform and ensure safe workplaces.

This year, many Agencies have also shared case studies that highlight the great work that happens across our State Service every day, in building capability in teams, in attracting people to come and work in the State Service, in leadership development, in addressing psychosocial safety in the workplace to name a few.

In reading this Report, I have reflected on the work we have done in the past financial year and also how we address the challenges ahead.  It is with much optimism that I look forward to building on the gains we have made in the past year, and in continuing to work together to build our capability and commitment in the delivery of services to Tasmanians.

It is indeed a privilege to present this Report and to lead the Tasmanian State Service. I encourage you to take a moment to have a read.

Best wishes
