Hello everyone

The 2026-27 State Budget has been developed at a time when we must continue delivering the services Tasmanians rely on, while also ensuring those services remain sustainable for the future.

This Budget includes key deliverables for which we are responsible, as well as significant operational efficiencies across government. These are not minor changes, and they should not be understated; however, they are achievable. They will require us to adapt the way we work, to keep improving how we deliver services, and to find better, more efficient ways of meeting the needs of the Tasmanian community. This does not mean doing less for Tasmanians, this means making sure we can continue to deliver strong, reliable and responsive services in a way that is sustainable over the long term.

We are making every effort to improve the efficiency and productivity of the State Service in ways that allow services to be maintained or improved. This includes looking carefully at how we work, reducing duplication, strengthening procurement and contract management and modernising systems and processes. It also means continuing to focus on practical reforms that support better outcomes for the community, while making sure we are using public money responsibly and effectively.

Digitisation will play an important role in this work. Better digital systems can make services easier to access, reduce administrative burden, and help our workforce spend more time on the work that matters most. The responsible use of artificial intelligence also has the potential to support service delivery, improve productivity and assist staff in practical ways. As we adopt new tools, we will do so carefully and responsibly, with a clear focus on supporting people, protecting trust and improving the quality and consistency of services.

I know that periods of change and reform can create uncertainty, and that machinery-of-government changes in particular can raise understandable questions for staff about teams, roles and the future. That uncertainty is real, and it is important that it is acknowledged and managed with care. Should you wish to seek support, please consider contacting your Employee Assistance Program.

What remains constant is the value of your contribution and the importance of the work you do. Thank you for your dedication, your professionalism and your service to Tasmania. Your efforts are central to delivering for the community now and to building a State Service that is strong, sustainable and ready for the future.

Kind regards
Kath
