Hello everyone,

National Carers Week 2025, from 12 - 18 October, is a chance to recognise and celebrate the more than 87,000 Tasmanians who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend.

Under the Carer Recognition Act 2023, a carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, or friend, who has a disability, mental-ill health, a chronic or life-limiting condition, alcohol or other drug dependence, is frail or aged or is a child, if the person is an informal kinship carer of the child.

Carers are quiet champions of our community. Their dedication makes a real difference to the lives of those they care for, and their contribution is immense. In Tasmania, one in six people are carers, above the national average of one in eight.

As part of National Carers Week, I encourage you to take a moment to show your appreciation. You might like to join a Carers Week event hosted by your agency or host a ‘Cuppa with a Carer’ morning tea in your team to show your support.

The Tasmanian State Service (TSS) is committed to supporting employees who are carers.

I am pleased to share that we have been recognised as an Accredited Carer Employer, through the Carers + Employers Program. This program recognises workplaces that support carers and it’s a key step towards building a more inclusive and supportive TSS.

You can explore the Carers Toolkit for information about support available to carers in the TSS by clicking here.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact carers.actionplan@dpac.tas.gov.au

Let’s come together to recognise, support and celebrate the incredible carers among us.
