A respectful, age-friendly Tasmania

Older Tasmanians are immensely important in our community. We recognise the valuable contributions they make to our society and our economy.

Tasmania has the oldest population and is ageing faster than any other state or territory in the nation. The Tasmanian Government’s vision is a respectful, age-friendly island where older Tasmanians are valued, connected, and supported.

A Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025-2029 seeks to enable an environment that supports the wellbeing, potential and value of older Tasmanians and address the unique challenges associated with ageing in Tasmania.

Your views shaped the plan

We thank the more than 1,500 Tasmanians who generously shared their concerns, aspirations and recommendations about ageing well in Tasmania through the Healthy, Engaged and Resilient Active Ageing Consultation Outcome Report. Your views have shaped the vision, outcomes and priorities outlined in the plan.

We thank the Council on the Ageing Tasmania for organising the statewide consultations and for the organisation’s continuing support as the peak body representing the interests of older Tasmanians.

The plan’s development also benefited greatly from the views and expertise provided by two Tasmanian Government reference groups. We would like to thank members of the Older Tasmanians Action Plan Reference Group and the State-wide Elder Abuse Prevention Committee.

Preventing the abuse and mistreatment of older Tasmanians

The plan also addresses the priorities in Lifelong Respect: Tasmania's Strategy to End the Abuse of Older People (Elder Abuse) 2023-2029 (PDF 4.1MB). We want to make sure older Tasmanians are living empowered lives free from abuse and neglect.

Elder abuse can occur in many forms and it does not discriminate. Elder abuse can also be hard to identify because often the person being abused feels fear, denial or shame and tries to hide the abuse. If you are not sure if you, or someone you know, is suffering from elder abuse, it helps to know a little more.

Find out more at the Elder Abuse Tasmania website or call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1800 441 169.

Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council

The Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council will play a key role in advising on implementing A Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025-2029. There are five lived experience positions and two roles for representatives from organisations that work with older Tasmanians on the council.

Members will provide advice to inform Tasmanian Government responses to issues and challenges experienced by older Tasmanians. The council will assist in the development and delivery of Tasmanian Government policy, programs and projects to ensure older Tasmanians are valued, connected and supported. View the council's draft terms of reference (PDF 191.4KB).

Expressions of interest for membership on the council have closed with appointments to be announced.
