Aboriginal people are at the centre of our work

Aboriginal Partnerships is a team in the Department of Premier and Cabinet that works with Aboriginal people and organisations to support the delivery of the Tasmanian Government's Aboriginal Affairs agenda.

We advise the Tasmanian Government on policy issues affecting Tasmanian Aboriginal people, lead and coordinate whole-of-government Aboriginal initiatives, advise on engagement with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community sector, and coordinate the implementation of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap in Tasmania.

Our approach is to assist and guide government agencies to embed Aboriginal-led co-design processes and Aboriginal knowledge. We are committed to ensuring our work is informed by the knowledge and experiences of Aboriginal people and focuses on the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal people.

Principles underpinning our work:

  1. Aboriginal people are at the centre of our work. Our work is informed by Aboriginal people's priorities, and collaboration and partnerships with Aboriginal people and organisations.
  2. Aboriginal cultural safety is a priority. We support environments where Aboriginal people feel culturally safe, respected, listened to and understood.
  3. Reform is necessary. The priority reforms of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap make it clear how government systems need to transform and close the gap, to support equal life and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal people and Tasmanians.
  4. Truth-telling is essential. Acknowledging past injustices and contemporary challenges faced by Tasmanian Aboriginal people is fundamental to support healing from pervasive inter-generational trauma.

Note: Tasmania's First Nations people are Aboriginal. Accordingly, we use Aboriginal rather than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Aboriginal should be read as inclusive of all First Nations people in Tasmania, including Torres Strait Islander people.
