Disability Royal Commission Report publication (04 Oct 2023)

The Chair of the Disability Royal Commission and all the Commissioners were present to hand over the report to the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) at Government House on 28 September 2023. The report has also been handed to the Tasmanian Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC.
The Australian Government has tabled the final report in the Australian Parliament and the report is now available on the Disability Royal Commission website here.
The Royal Commission was established to examine widespread concerns about the treatment of people with disability in Australia, in the past and the present.
The Final Report is the result of an extensive inquiry which has asked what governments, institutions and communities can do to better respond to and protect people with disability from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
The 28th September was a significant day for people with disability across Australia. I acknowledge those people in Tasmania who shared their experiences with the Royal Commission. Their courage to share has shaped the Commission’s findings and will tell us how we can prevent violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability and act to provide better protections for people with disability in the future.
The Royal Commission has had a whole of Government and whole of community focus.
The Report will shortly also be tabled in the Tasmanian Parliament, and its findings carefully considered by the Tasmanian Government.
The Royal Commission continues to provide independent advocacy and counselling supports. I encourage you to engage in those supports as you navigate the difficult and often confronting material in the report. Support contacts can be found on the Royal Commission website here.
