Jenny Gale, Head of the State Service, message to all staff

COVID-19 Update (20 Dec 2021)

Dear Colleagues

Last week was a very difficult week, with the tragic events in Devonport weighing heavily on our hearts. At this time of year, devastating losses such as these are particularly upsetting, not only for those directly impacted but right across the broader community. I want to thank the many people who have been involved in responding to this tragedy, from the first responders on the scene, to those working directly at Hillcrest Primary and those working to support the community through their grief.

Meanwhile, our borders opened and as expected, a number of COVID-19 cases have been detected across our State. We all knew Tasmania would experience COVID-19 cases, and we are prepared for this. COVID-19 cases will increase and it is important for us to remain calm and follow the advice of Public Heath Tasmania. Each one of us has a responsibility to remain informed as exposure sites are listed and public health measures change. I encourage you to regularly check the Coronavirus website, and you can also check exposure sites at any time via the Check-in Tas app.

Last week, the Department of Health implemented a tile dashboard on their Facebook page, which provides daily updates to communicate broadly to the Tasmanian community, and visitors, the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Tasmania, vaccination status of Tasmanians with COVID-19, number being treated at home, number being treated in hospital, the number of patients being treated in ICU and sadly the number of Tasmanians who have died from the disease.

Yesterday the Premier announced that from 12:01am on Tuesday 21 December, masks will be mandatory indoors, which means at all of our workplaces across Tasmania. This additional measure will help stop the spread of COVID-19 as we go about our daily business.

Remember to continue to practice all the other COVID-safe behaviours to protect yourself, your colleagues, family and friends:

  • Be fully vaccinated and get a booster shot as soon as you are able to.
  • If you feel unwell, even just a sniffle, please stay at home.
  • Wash and sanitise your hands regularly.
  • Use the Check-in Tas app.
  • Keep 1.5 metres away from people.
  • Regularly check the Coronavirus website.

I know many of you will be feeling anxious and concerned. Christmas can be a difficult time and the events of recent weeks may be compounding your feelings. Please remember your EAP service is available to you, and your family should you require it. I also encourage you to reach out to Lifeline (13 11 14) or any other service that provides support and counselling if living with COVID-19 in our community causes you concern or stress.

I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas.
