Kathrine Morgan-Wicks, Head of the State Service, message to all staff

Tragic Death of Tasmania Police Officer (18 Jun 2025)

Hello everyone

On Monday we received the devastating news that a Tasmania Police Officer was fatally shot in the line of duty in the State’s North-West.

As a consequence of this tragic event, we now mourn the loss of Constable Keith Anthony Smith, a well-regarded, highly experienced and dedicated member of our police service, who has served the Tasmanian community for 25 years.

On behalf of everyone in the Tasmanian State Service, I wish to express heartfelt condolences to Constable Smith’s family, friends, and to Commissioner Donna Adams and our colleagues in Tasmania Police.

Every day, Tasmania Police Officers undertake their duties with courage and bravery, supporting the Tasmanian community and working hard to ensure we can all live in a safe place.

No one should have to leave their family for work and never return home. Yesterday’s terrible circumstances are a reminder to us all the risk faced daily by our police officers and the incredibly important service Tasmania Police provides for all Tasmanians.

Yesterday, at the Premier’s and Commissioner Adams’s request, our flags were flown at half-mast to mark this tragedy and to honour the life of Constable Smith. Today, we continue to mourn his loss in our thoughts and in our acts of compassion and respect.

Tasmania Police will have a public condolence page available on their website later today for anyone wishing to leave a message for the family and colleagues of Constable Smith. Visit www.police.tas.gov.au if you would like to leave your condolences.

I recognise that this situation may be very difficult for people across our agencies. Please, if you need support, I encourage you to reach out to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providers:
