Kathrine Morgan-Wicks, Head of the State Service, message to all staff

Severe weather - emergency information (01 Sep 2024)

Hello everyone

This weekend Tasmania has experienced severe and ongoing weather conditions causing significant damage and disruption to power supply, telecommunications networks and road closures.  Emergency flood alerts have been issued in several locations and some communities are isolated.

I encourage all staff to stay up to date with the latest weather warnings and advice, with the severe weather forecast to continue across Tasmania this weekend and into early next week.

Tasmania’s official emergency information and warnings platform, TasALERT, is now available on mobile devices.  The new app is an extension of the redeveloped TasALERT website, with both purpose-built platforms designed to provide a central source for timely emergency information and warnings.  The TasALERT app allows people to create an account, set their preferences and sign up for warning notifications in their area or other locations you may wish to monitor for family or friends.

To download the app, visit your app store, or go to TasALERT.com/download

The State Emergency Service (SES) advises that people should continue to:

  • Supervise children closely.
  • Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
  • Manage pets and livestock.
  • Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
  • Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004 but never go near fallen power lines.
  • Beware of damaged trees and powerlines and take care when driving.
  • Listen to ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

If you need assistance from the SES, phone 132 500.

In an emergency, always phone Triple Zero (000).

Stay up to date with the latest alerts and warnings at the following links:

If you are in an area which continues to experience power outages – please take care and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours that may need additional help or assistance.

I wish to acknowledge and thank everyone involved in the emergency response and recovery process.  Teams across the State Service, and government infrastructure – including SES, DPFEM, TasNetworks, Telstra, State Roads, Local Government, and Ambulance Tas have been out working in extremely challenging conditions.  It has been and continues to be a significant team effort – thank you to everyone involved.

Please stay safe and continue to follow the advice. If you are unable to attend work or require support from your employer, please contact your manager or HR team in your workplace.

Kind regards

Kath
