Hello everyone,
Tomorrow, 8 March is International Women's Day and it is a major day of celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women across the world.
This year’s theme ‘March Forward’ reminds us that progress is about taking decisive, bold steps to turn our commitments into action. This is our moment to drive change and ensure a truly equal future for all women and girls.
While globally significant barriers to gender inequality remain, the Tasmanian State Service has a range of strategies, policies and programs aimed at improving gender equity.
Women now hold 49.95 per cent of positions on Tasmanian Government boards and committees – this is just one position short of parity and the government’s 50 per cent target as outlined in its Women on Boards Strategy 2020-2025.
Women are also well represented in leadership positions across government with more than 50 per cent of Senior Executive Service positions within our Tasmanian Government agencies. We are also encouraging more women to step up through our Women Supporting Women in Leadership Strategy.
This progress is a testament to the growing recognition and importance of fostering an environment where women are empowered to lead and succeed.
However, true equality also requires ensuring women's safety and wellbeing, both in and outside the workplace.
It is crucial that women have the opportunity to live without fear, fully participate in society, and have access to the resources needed to achieve financial independence. Addressing violence against women is an integral part of this broader goal, and the Tasmanian Government's coordinated action through the Survivors at the Centre plan underscores our commitment to eliminating family and sexual violence in our community.
Lastly, I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women ceremony taking place today in Launceston.
The Honour Roll will recognise 26 incredible Tasmanian women and three organisations for their significant contributions locally, nationally and internationally. I encourage you to head to the Women in Tasmania website and Facebook page to see the full list of this year’s inductees.
I hope you all have a fantastic International Women’s Day tomorrow and take part in the many events and functions happening across Tasmania.
Kind Regards,
