HoSS Message I Appointment of Secretary - Department for Education, Children, and Young People (10 Apr 2025)

Dear Colleagues

As you will be aware, Ms Ginna Webster has been undertaking the role of Secretary of the Department for Education, Children, and Young People (DECYP) since September last year following the resignation of Tim Bullard, who took on a national role within the education sector.

Ginna’s wealth of experience in senior leadership roles across the Tasmanian State Service, including as Secretary of the former Department of Communities Tasmania and the Department of Justice, has been invaluable as she has guided DECYP through a period of change and reform in Education, Youth Justice and Out-of-Home-Care.

I am delighted to be able to announce today that Ginna has now been formally appointed as Secretary of the Department for Education, Children, and Young People through to 1 July 2028.

Following a short period of retirement in mid-2024 prior to taking on the role of DECYP Secretary in an interim capacity, Ginna has found that her passion for supporting Tasmania’s children and young people is as strong as it has always been, and she is inspired to lead the systemic and sectoral change required as a result of the findings and recommendations of the recent Independent Review of the Tasmanian Education System.

Ginna’s demonstrated experience in overseeing significant program reform, and her expertise on issues pertaining to vulnerable people in our community, will be assets for DECYP as she continues to steward the agency through the ongoing implementation of the Commission of Inquiry recommendations and the delivery of significant positive and necessary change for Tasmania’s children and young people.

Please join me in warmly congratulating Ginna on her appointment as the Secretary of the Department for Education, Children and Young People.
