2025-26 State Budget (30 May 2025)

Hello everyone,

Yesterday the Treasurer handed down the 2025-26 State Budget.

Pulling together the budget is a big task, it involves a lot of people working hard to ensure it meets the evolving needs of the Tasmanian community in the best possible way. I know many of you have worked hard on this year’s budget, so I’d like to say thank you to everyone involved.

This year’s budget includes a key initiative of maintaining the Tasmanian State Service workforce to ensure we are the right size, right shape, right place and have the right enablers to meet the needs of the Tasmanian community.

To support this important work, the Efficiency and Productivity Unit (EPU) within the Department of Premier and Cabinet has been established.

This unit will work under the guidance and support from experts from outside of the public service but will also gain insight and feedback from within the TSS on how workplaces can be made more productive.

The EPU will identify, capture and report on opportunities to improve public sector productivity including looking at digital innovation, increased collaboration and shared service engagement to help drive productivity. It will focus on reducing costs on low priority activities which will increase capacity to direct efforts towards higher-valued services.

More information on how State servants can have their say will be available shortly.

Speaking of collaboration, I want to take this opportunity to highlight the incredible work across government on the consultation package for the draft Macquarie Point Planning Permit Bill.

The package required collaboration from across agencies, with policy officers and subject matter experts sharing their skills and knowledge. It was a team effort and a great example of how our State Service can work together to achieve incredible results.

The draft Bill, draft project report, summary report and draft permit and conditions are now out for consultation, and I encourage you to visit tas.gov.au/stadium-legislation to see the material and should you wish, have your say on this project.

Thank you once again to everyone for what has been a very busy week across government.

Kind regards,
