Tasmanian Youth Parliament

Communities, Sport and Recreation supports the Tasmanian Youth Parliament through a Grant Deed with the YMCA Hobart.

The Tasmanian Youth Parliament brings together young Tasmanians for a program aiming to educate and empower young people about Tasmania's political workings and significant social issues; while also providing opportunities to engage with important political and community figures.

Youth Parliament is open to all members of the public who are encouraged to come along and observe Youth Parliament proceedings.

The Tasmanian Youth Parliament is part of a national youth development program, supported by the Tasmanian Government and YMCA Hobart to provide young people with a forum to express ideas, concerns and expectations regarding the future of their state.

In Tasmania, Youth Parliament has been held annually for more than 20 years, delivered by a taskforce of young volunteers appointed by the Tasmanian Youth Government Association (TYGA), and supported by YMCA Hobart.

Youth Parliament educates young people about the parliamentary system and provides an opportunity for students to create Youth Motions and Bills and communicate their opinions to government. It also provides learning and development opportunities in:

• civic engagement
• public speaking and debating
• writing
• leadership and mentoring
• event management

The program is aimed at students in grades 11 and 12 and involves a seven day camp with a mix of parliamentary-related training, recreational activities, a formal reception with members of Parliament, and a variety of other functions to allow contact with politicians and other government officials.
